So You Call Yourself A Leader... Are You Sure About That?

By Renee Stuart on Jan 30, 2013

No matter what career you've chosen, and regardless of what business you are in, it’s important to be willing to do what you believe in. Everyone has a responsibility to step up and do his or her part to make the world (their world) a better place. It is your birthright to stand up, take action and seek positive progress.

The following questions have been asked countless times in business:

  • Why do so many people turn their head?
  • Why don’t people take responsibility and lead?

The fact is most companies don’t talk about leadership development, much less spend money on it. When companies do takes steps to help develop their teams leadership skills – many employees concede that the proposed help is just a big waste of time. The workforce makes this assessment simply because they have no buy-in.

They cannot see the value for leadership development for two reasons:

  • They do not perceive themselves as a leaders
  • They are not required by their employer to take action as a leader.

If the employees don’t see themselves as leaders, and everyone person on staff is not held accountable to lead – they will never drink the company Kool-Aid.  AND isn’t that exactly what you want for your business? Employee’s so committed to your companies principles, values and mission that they choose to show up everyday fueled with motivation; guiding /directing themselves and other, sharing their thoughts and knowledge, and taking bold actions with the intent to make their life, and the lives of others better?

I encourage you to evaluate your companies most valued asset – your human capital. Explore your team’s willingness to lead. Look for the Extreme Leaders? Also consider making leadership development part of your financial growth plan.

EXTREME LEADERSHIP: A wholehearted commitment to making things better; often at the risk of failure and sacrifice.

STEVE FARBER

To be an extreme leader doesn’t require a college degree, a fancy job title, a six-figure income, or a strong fist and loud voice.  The only thing required is a willingness to take the Radical L.E.A.P.

  • A willingness to cultivate LOVE
    • Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do.
  • A willingness to generate ENERGY
    • Be a powerful force for action and progress and an enthusiastic believer in people’s capacity to do the awesome.
  • A willingness to inspire AUDACITY
    • Boldly disregard “normal” constraints in order to change the world for the better.
  • A willingness to provide PROOF:
    • Walk your talk, be courageous, and develop the Extreme Leaders in your midst.

Evaluate the culture of your company. Explore how your leadership team is inspiring your knowledge workers everyday.  If you choose to cultivate a group of Extreme leaders to run your company, remember, no one wants to feel forced into taking an already proven path – if they did, they would be following someone else’s path, and not clearing their own.

To provide support as a mentor, advisor or coach is important, but what’s more important is that your team members take responsibility for their own actions – and lack of actions – their success will mean so much more when they can own each step of the way.

  • What does extreme leadership mean to you in your environment?

As always I welcome your feedback and encourage your comments. Also, if you are interested in learning how to bring the Extreme Leadership framework into your dealership, I’m standing by and excited to talk with you.

Awesome post Coach! I have never heard the term "extreme leadership" before and love it. We all strive to be better leaders, and I do that by surrounding myself with incredible leaders in the industry where I can learn from them and then in return, incorporate that leadership in our dealership.

  • Need a Strategy for Success? First, Hire the Right People.

A common perception of what makes a business successful is as follows: the leader is a genius who has a vision, defines the strategy, and all the employees work to make that vision into a reality.   The reality, however, is far different. In the best-selling business book, “Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t,” by Jim Collins, a team of researchers discovered that the most successful leaders focus on getting the right people on board before they set strategy. In essence, they load a bus with the right people and get them in the right seats, before they decide where to drive the bus.   An example of this was in the early 80’s when Dick Cooley became CEO of Wells Fargo. Cooley foresaw great changes ahead in the banking industry, but he did not know exactly what those changes would be. (Sound familiar? As much as the auto industry has changed in the last few years, I believe more change is ahead).   Instead of tryin...Read post

  • The Loyalty Playbook

Lady Gaga has her Little Monsters, Justin Bieber has his Beliebers, Kiss has their Kiss Army, and your dealership has ______? Where are your fans? Musicians focus their marketingon connecting with fans, that’s nothing new, but that approach is grounded in solid business sense. A 2010 Satmetrix study found that evangelists or fans, spend 13% more than the average customer, and they refer business equal to 45% of the money they spend.   How can your dealership think like a rock star?   Work to better understand your advocates. This will also help you determine the context of your relationship. Give your fans the tools and the ability to "share the love."   There's an old marketing adage: Sell the benefit, not the product. Remember that your fans typically love your brand for many reasons other than just the product itself. Think about how your fans use your product and what's important to them.   Seek wa...Read post

  • Pinterest: Brand Engagement Report

MarketingProfs recently revealed data by Curalate and Digitas, discussing the engagement of automotive brands and the automotive community on Pinterest. This information reinforces the need for dealerships to get involved on this social media site, and provides helpful information on when it is best to post your content. Below are details from the report that you may find useful for your interactions on Pinterest: 75% of the conversation and engagement around autos on Pinterest is being driven by the community, with only 25% of content originating from brands. Top automotive brands average three repins on every pin, whereas the community averages 10 repins per pin.   Are you using the right keywords? Are you pinning at the right time of day? Are you repinning enough? Are your images eye-catching? These are some questions you should be asking if your brand hasn’t received as much attention as you were hoping for from this social medi...Read post
