I came across this timeline of changes the major search engines have gone through over the past 10 years or so.
What struck me is that Google has been keeping it simple since the beginning – and they continue to be the dominant player online.
We can learn from this. Google is a great example of how to keep things simple. This KISS philosophy (keep it simple, silly) should also be applied to your business. Google’s success is because they concentrate on their core “search” capabilities, and don’t let themselves get distracted like their competitors do, with “overcrowding” their information. They keep their focus on what’s really important in what they provide: SEARCH.
What’s your business? What can you eliminate so that you can be focused on your most important capability?

This is a highly undervalued topic, especially in tough times. Research has proven, and business schools, books and successful CEO’s all remind us that focus is the key to success, especially in hard times.
There is a natural tendency to try to be everything to everyone, to own a piece of every market, or to serve every type of customer. This is a slippery slope where your resources will become diluted, your efforts will not be as strong and rather than being the best option for your target market, you will become another bland choice for every market.
Google has always (as your blog points out) focused its core on SEARCH, and providing the best search results for its users. Dealerships can do this by focusing their advertising around a particular vehicle, or store brand. Find out what is the most important element to your success and execute it VERY well… that is how you will be on top.
Great add in Jared! I agree 100%!
