  • Why Are You in Business? Hint: "To Make Money" is the Wrong Answer.

As a business leader, what motivates you to wake up and go to work every day? If you ask many people why they start a business or why they go to work every day, the answer is "to make money." But making money is the result of being in business; it's not the Why you are in business. To be a great leader or manager, you need to know your Why and you need to articulate it to employees and customers, so that they are inspired and motivated as well.   Apple Computers is one of the most successful companies in the world. In 1984 Steve Jobs introduced the first Macintosh computer and it's clear that his Why was to disrupt the status quo. To launch his new product, he ran this award-winning commercial during the 1984 Superbowl. The ad explains why Apple is in business and is as relevant today as it was then.   In his book Start with Why, Simon Sinek explains how great organizations align their Why, How and What:   Your What is selling and servicing vehicles Your How is your unique se...Read post

  • How One Person Can Make A Difference: A Lesson in Customer Advocacy

While the public is constantly barraged with negativity pertaining to car dealers, there are many instances that go ignored or are simply passed over. Let’s face it… the media (and a lot of websites/industry blogs) are typically more focused on perpetuating the stereotype of dealers as the “bad guys.” There are entire companies that have built their business model on this very premise. Anyone in the auto industry knows that you simply cannot do business that way and survive, yet stories and blog articles surface constantly about some random car dealer screwing a customer, refusing to fulfill promises, or taking advantage. Well, I’m here to tell you a story that might just make you like car dealers a little more. Part of my responsibilities with DealerKnows Consulting involves monitoring and assessing the performance of ISMs at dealerships. • Who Is More Loyal? Floyd Mayweather Or The Dealer?

A recent article in Automotive News relayed the story of Obi Obeke and how he had sold 39 cars to world-famous boxer Floyd Mayweather. The article explains how Okeke has been willing to do whatever it takes for his client to keep him satisfied. There’s little doubt that Floyd Mayweather probably gets what he wants when he wants it. And Okeke has delivered. Okeke has received phone calls at 3am requesting a brand-new Bugatti delivered to his house within 12 hours – a feat in and of itself in the exotic car business. And he has always delivered, even when it meant jumping on a plane and driving it to the champ’s house himself. According to the article, Mayweather hasn’t been Okeke’s only famous client – his customers have included the likes of Arnold Scwarzenegger, Jessica Simpson, Ellen DeGeneres, and Chris Tucker – to name a few.   The volume of vehicles Mayweather has purchased from Okeke begs the question as to why Mayweather continues to purchase vehicles from Oke...Read post

  • Preempt Lease-End Competition for Your CPO Inventory

The combination of consumer demand, increasing off-lease supply, and record-setting lease penetration is creating what could be sustainable momentum for the certified pre-owned (CPO) market. To provide context, consider the following market dynamics: Lease originations exceeded 3.5 million in 2014, Manheim reports—their highest level since 2000. CPO sales increased nearly 11% last year and accounted for 20% of used car sales in 2014, according to Edmunds.com. TrueCar notes that CPO sales this year will total more than 2.5 million units, predicting 2015’s supply of one-to-five-year-old used vehicles, including CPO, at 10.4 million units. As these market dynamics unfold, used car managers will need to source CPO inventory more wisely than their competition. To help stay ahead and grow market share, I suggest two strategies: Obtain CPO inventory from nontraditional sources. Get ahead of banks and lenders, lease-conquest marketers, and other dealers before lease-end. Executing ...Read post
