Hackers Hijack Dealership Phone lines, Demand…$851

April 17, 2018 0 Comments

For today’s story, a Toyota dealership is currently in a very unusual battle for control…of their phone lines.

According to a WKYC report, Summit Toyota out of Akron, Ohio has had its phone lines “held hostage for ransom.” The phone lines are reportedly “internet based” and were somehow hacked and controlled by unknown hackers, who are demanding payment to return the lines to the dealership.

The report goes on to state that the store hasn’t received a lot of law enforcement support from local or FBI officials. The indication is that the dealership hasn’t had a lot of law enforcement interest in the case because the hackers are only asking for $851.

What is your take on this phone line takeover? If this type of issue arose at your store or group, what strategy would you undertake in order to deal with the problem?
