Google Places Bug Makes Reviews Disappear

I'm not sure what changes are happening behind the scenes at Google, but I received two frantic emails today from clients that saw their review counts practically disappear. Honda Cars of Bellevue had a total of 42 reviews showing on Google Places last week, and this is how things look today:

Acton Toyota last week had over 1,000 reviews last week and this is what their Google Places listing looks like today, November 8, 2010:

Is anyone else seeing their Google Places review counts dropping? It looks like there is a bug in their system that is going to be hurting many businesses.

I'm seeing it show 2 different numbers often from the same dealership simply by refreshing the pages sometimes. Other times, refreshing didn't change it but redoing the search in Google did.

I've heard that sometimes Google gets "mis-aligned" and that the reviews disappear but that they eventually come back. I started researching this on the Google forums and this is a worldwide issue and its been affecting both Google and 3rd party reviews (although, for the most part, not at the same time)

At eXteresAUTO we have also seen a few dealers with hundreds of reviews have them magically disappear - or go down to 2-3. When Google was contacted they described it as a temporary indexing glitch/problem...and we have seen those reviews "come back" a couple days later. Indicative of how the Google Places roll-out is still very much in beta/testing/incomplete mode. On many fronts.
