AFTERMARKET PARTS

Steve Tuschen
What do everyone feel about using aftermarket parts on your make vehicles? Customer or internal?
Jillian Marchewka
I currently work for an Independent Pre-Owned Dealership, and we have done some cool stuff with aftermarket accessories on vehicles. For example, we snagged a really nice '12 RAM 1500 that was a local trade with super low miles... It was more of a base model, and we got it at a great price. So we decided to do a "Red Rock Custom" truck and we added a 3 inch lift, aggressive wheels, and off-road tires (all aftermarket.) We did the work in-house in our service center, and the truck looked AWESOME! We then made a nice gross profit on the unit, even after the add-ons (which also allowed us to up the price a bit!) We also highlighted the truck and the modifications on our social media channels, and people loved it and were highly engaged with the content we posted. It was a win for everyone!

@Jillian, Awesome marketing idea.

@steve I did not have any problem and even somewhat encouraged it when an advisor was selling a repair and the customer voiced a concern about price we would give the customer options of using a non factory part trying to save the job and keep it from leaving. Our parts department still made the same money and we were able to save a deal. We were very clear to the customer about the parts warranty implications

@Denim. Thanks I agree as well, the OE's are starting to punish for using aftermarket parts to the point where we even have to watch the parts being billed on used cars, so you have to achieve the balance of taking care of the customer, saving the job, and playing in the OE's sandbox.

@Denim You mentioned encouraging aftermarket when cost was a factor...keep the job here...parts department still made the same money. So do you mark up aftermarket parts more than OE parts?
