Does an OEM maintenance minder for service maintenance really help the consumer? Help parts sales? Therefore...Help a Dealer?

The push to create long lasting relationships with our customers is any Dealerships mantra. This is also the Buzzword for most OEM's today...LOYALTY. With new standards of what I call, maintenance minder, (where the internal computer basically tells the car it is time for an oil change), does this create loyalty for the consumer to come back to their dealer for regular maintenance over time since the intervals are arguably lengthened? Does not maintaining the vehicle properly, yet keep cost to maintain down, achieve loyalty within brand? Would a "sludge" problem make a consumer consider a new brand at new vehicle purchase time? Do lengthened service intervals lead to high mileage issues down the road in regards to maintenance?
