Union Shops - Good or Bad and How to Prevent

Steve Devereaux
I made this discussion because of my lack of knowledge regarding unions, how they are formed in car dealerships and measure that you can take to prevent them. Union shops tend to be rare, but once they are formed they are hard to get rid of. I suppose that unions were created for a purpose and they are organized for a purpose, but I have also heard that once a union is organized at a car dealership, which almost always happens in the service department, they are almost imposable to get rid of. Is it even possible to get rid of a union that has organized at the Service Department of a car dealership? I believe that common sense plays a big role in business, which is basically the only way that I currently know how to prevent a union from organizing. If you treat your employees fairly, then they won't turn against you and organize. I'm a strong believer in treating your employees fairly, but I wouldn't want a political loop hole in the system to get by me and a union is organized and imposable to get rid of. What are some measures that you can take to prevent unions from organizing? Why do they organize in the first place? What kind of dealerships do unions target specifically? If you have any experiences regarding unions please share them here. Thank you.
