Is a rising Bounce Rate always bad?

Ron Henson
What do you think? Are there instances when a rising Bounce Rate can be a good thing?
Grant Gooley
A rising bounce rate OVERALL yes can be bad. However, if you are monitoring a specific page, it totally depends on the goals and outcome you are looking for. If you want someone to land on a page, make a phone call and leave, your bounce rate will be 100% except you are obtaining your goal. It really depends...
Ron Henson
Well said Grant. I was speaking with a dealer who was concerned that his bounce rate was increasing on his "Print Directions" page. :-)
Lauren Moses
Ron, did you maybe mention that some people don't take as long to find the print symbol and actually print it out as others? That could really attest to some of it. It takes me like 5 seconds on most versus my boss, like 5 minutes.
Ron Henson
Hey Lauren, I certainly posed the question with tongue in cheek. Actually, Bounce Rate is the percentage of single-page sessions (i.e. sessions in which the person left your site from the entrance page without interacting with the page). Many are under the false impression that it is measured by time on site which is not the case.
Lauren Moses
Gotcha. So more or less he is seeing increase in people only looking at the hours and directions? Wouldn't that be more of a good thing since that is some of your more serious shoppers that would be trying to find out where your located and when your open? I may be missing the entirely (which I chalk up to lack of sleep and sickness at the moment ...not the blonde in me)
