What is a leader - built or born?

Joe Orr
Another friend shared this a moment ago - A leader is a visionary who sees the past, recognizes the present, and dreams of the future; who communicates the good, the bad, and the possible to those around him/her in a way that motivates all to desire and work for a better, safer norm. Paul Dicker

great topic, I just posed the same question about Salespeople. I believe that we are right in the same vein. I believe the same to be true of leaders, they all display many great qualities...but the BEST all have a few things in common (you mentioned) and those traits I believe are just born into you...extroverts. Same thing, I think the extroverts make the better leaders. It's not a guarantee of a great leader, but a heck of a foundation

There are two kinds of leaders; the one we make of ourselves and the one we are blessed to be born with. The one we are born with is, was and always will be the most important and meaningful of leadership traits, that being "selfless servant leaders." Everyone can give of themselves, and therefore lead. This is a Godly gift each of us is given and taught, shown and displayed throughout biblical history for us to follow today. Jesus, in John 15 says: "I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." What was this model? In my own words: 'to become so uniquely better together, serving others so uniquely better together.'

Earl, sorry by you are wrong about extroverts. You need to watch this video on TED by Susan Cain. http://www.ted.com/talks/susan_cain_the_power_of_introverts.html One quote to remember is, "“There’s zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas.” In fact there is a wealth of evidence to show that many great leaders are introverts. Often the best sales people are the best listeners, NOT the best talkers. It's the same with leaders. My experience has been that the loudest talkers in the dealership and in online-forums are the least productive in the business world.

I like that, but it's been my experience that people buy the salesperson more than they buy the information they are selling. The auto salesperson in particular. I do not think it has anything to do with being loud and boisterous or talking the most. I believe the extrovert is better suited for sales because the extrovert is comfortable going out of the their social safe zone (if they have one) the extrovert is more likely to press harder to draw out the objection, and the extrovert is going to provide for a more friendly outgoing experience. just what I've observed. I have found that the introverts I've met in car dealerships are usually high-level managers...and usually of the "Ivory Tower" variety who don't step out of their offices much. In a controlled environment, I think the extrovert sells more cars and has happier customers than the introvert

Very important information and excellent insight, Mark. Throughout biblical history, the extrovert showed off their 'leadership' style via dictatorial (do what I say, not what I do) loud voice stances, such as were the scribes and pharisees, and all those "leaders" that led people away from their Godly ways. Even Jesus took mostly introverts to become His disciples and build His Church. Selfless servant leaders are not weak leaders because they lead by Godly example, often recognized as a quiet voice. They are the best. If any one of us is not a show-me by example selfless servant leader, then any one of us can then only be a dictatorial, tell, point, direct, uncaring, non-team player selfish WIIFM leader. This is why it is important to recognize, lift up, bring out and applaud the selfless servant leader that exists in each and every one of us. We are all born with this trait. Therefore, we are each born with the best of introvert traits. Most of us would be characterized as ambiverts, having near equal introvert and extrovert traits. Our culture today is so pro the loudest extrovert voices leading people opposite of biblical proven leadership. Look at media, politics, big business MIS-leading, and you see the selfish extroverts attempting to minimize introverts and ambiverts. Man-made built leaders are not God-made built leaders. Man-made built leaders lead civilizations to demise. God-made built leaders lead civilizations to life.
