Odd Spikes in Site Traffic

Brian Pasch
Most likely hacking attacks. I saw this on a Cobalt website this summer and upon further research, it was most likely a DOS attack.

Would make sense since the spikes i am seeing on my sites are on the same days too.

Chris, several other customers have reported seeing this in their Google Analytics reports. We looked into this and saw similar traffic attributes as you did. Our analysis showed that majority of the traffic spikes are coming from IP addresses owned by MIcrosoft. Coupled with other behavioral factors, we believe these are bots crawling your website to collect data. There's a video on GA's help forum that will guide you through creating a filtered report. https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1033017?hl=en. I can also email you a step-by-step guide on how to create a customized report in GA filtered without this msn.com bot. Feel free to reach me at eajones@cobalt.com.

Thanks Ellen for adding additional insights! It is great to see Cobalt listening to their customer's needs.

Thanks for the suggestion Ellen. Our power SEO had actually sent over a segment template which was super cool of him to do. Thanks David! It did do its job but it didn't give me the answers I was looking for. So I spent some more time digging and I've found the root of the issue which I've passed up to the cobalt team. Hopefully will be hearing something back soon.

Hi Chris, Thanks for sharing that information back to the team! Ellen
