Talking about the latest model, the most determining feature is the all new V-6 engine and 8- speed transmission, which is the excellent combination in the midsize segment.  Stan Ludlow, the Chief Engineer of the 2017 Colorado, says that it is the most fuel efficient pick-up truck in America with an EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway when equipped with a diesel engine.

• Horsepower and torque have been increased to an SAE certified 308hp at 6800rpm and 275 lb-ft at 4000rpm.
• The engine is teamed up with class exclusive eight-speed transmission which has features like:
• Hydra-Matic 8L45 developed by GM and weights as the 6L80 six speed automatic is replaced.
• Offers 7.0 overall gear ratio spread over 6L80 transmission’s 6.0 ratio.

These features give higher gear ratio that helps driver to start off easily even if the truck is loaded with heavy luggage or when towing, and has numerically lower rear axle ratios that reduces the engine rpm on the highway for improved efficiency.

Use of aluminum and magnesium when combined with similar packaging to the outgoing 6L80 transmission makes no increase in the overall weight.
