Cox Automotive and KBB are STEALING your Facebook Marketplace Traffic

Whether or not you have a service that publishes your Facebook Marketplace listings or if a Cox Automotive property is publishing on your behalf, make no mistake that Kelley Blue Book (KBB) is stealing your traffic from Facebook Marketplace and giving it to your competition.

If you list your vehicles on Facebook Marketplace and have a relationship with Cox Automotive, KBB or AutoTrader, LOOK OUT! They are stealing your traffic and taking credit for leads.

Worst of all, they are using your vehicles to generate leads for your competitors.

It is no secret that Facebook Marketplace is one of the best tools to get your vehicles in front of in-market shoppers. So much so, that it is in the top 5 lead sources for used cars for many dealers.

Because of this popularity there is a land grab going on for publishing your inventory feed to Facebook. Your chat provider may publish for you, Edmunds wants to publish for you, Cars.com just announced they will publish for you and KBB has a relationship built in with Facebook.

Why are they doing this? They want to take credit for the leads and traffic!

Let me walk you through what a consumer would see when looking at one of your vehicles.

Here is an example of a pre-owned vehicle that we have listed on Facebook Marketplace. What really catches your eye is the graph that shows how well this vehicle is priced to the market. It is what lies underneath it, is where dealers should be up in arms.

If you click "See This on KBB.com" you are taken to KBB and shown a generic vehicle detail page for the exact vehicle you were just browsing in Facebook.

Here is where the fun starts:

When you click the "Get your Quote" button under "Free Dealer Price Quote" you will have one of two experiences.

Experience #1

KBB will tell you that there are no participating dealers FOR THE EXACT VEHICLE YOU WERE JUST LOOKING AT!

This is not delivering a great experience for the consumer. They were interested in a specific used vehicle and KBB did not deliver. The consumer had the vehicle they wanted, but then KBB did not deliver on their promise.

Experience #2 - The One ALL DEALERS SHOULD BE SCREAMING ABOUT

If there are participating dealers, then KBB will take the consumer who was interested in YOUR EXACT USED CAR and distribute to 3 other dealers.

They are taking your used inventory and giving leads to 3 dealers.

TIPS TO TAKE AWAY:

  1. If you have listings on Facebook, check to see if the KBB Market Price is showing on them.
  2. If you the KBB pricing guide on your listings, let KBB and Cox Automotive know that this practice is NOT ACCEPTABLE!

It seems to me if this is true and accurate, (which we have no reason to believe it is not) then it goes well beyond telling them it's not acceptable... its a breach of trust...

The fact that Cox and KBB are one-in-same is a scary thought in and of itself.
