Pinterest - It’s Not Just for Women

f09344e0ce730c5520a2978c8d3a0879.JPG?t=1If you asked a room full of women how many of them were on Pinterest, it wouldn’t be surprising to have most of them raise their hand.  They love the recipes, crafts and clothing ideas.  But there’s so much more to it. 

What is Pinterest?  Think of it as an online cork board, where you have pinned photos of your favorite things.  When you are online doing research and you find something you like, you can pin it to a board and keep track of it.  A board is a way of organizing the things you’ve collected, something like placing it in a file cabinet.  And now all those favorite things are online, in one place.  How’s that for organization!

Let’s say you’re planning a wedding.  You can create a “My Fabulous Day” board on Pinterest and pin your ideas that you find online.  You can also find inspiration from others on Pinterest and pin those ideas on your own boards as well.  Everything is organized and ready for planning.

Pinterest launched in 2010 and has over 70 million users.  As of 2014, there were 30 billion pins and 750 million boards.  GlobalWebIndex.net states that Pinterest was the fastest growing social network in 2014. 

According to TechCrunch.com, as of November 2014, Pinterest said that their male users made up one-third of the site’s signups.  They also said that the number of active male users has doubled in the past year. 

So what inspires the average male on Pinterest?  A study performed by researchers at the University of Minnesota and Georgia Tech said that the top pins for men was photography, art, design and home décor.  There are unlimited opportunities available: sports, cars, trucks, garages, woodworking, designing a house, gift ideas for women, man food, beer!  So come on guys, get on “Board”!

I'm not afraid to admit that I was one of the early male adopters of Pinterest back in 2011 or so. I immediately saw it as a fun social network to share and discover many of the things that I'm passionate about. Star Wars, Geek Stuff, Comic Books, Vintage Toys, the 80's and more! Although I don't use it much these days, as most of my social time is spent on Facebook, Twitter & Google+, every so often I like to jump back in and pin some new stuff. From a business related standpoint, we tried using Pinterest for a couple of our stores as a test but weren't able to gain that much traction. However there's definitely potential there, especially if you're creating original and unique blog content. I think in our case it was a matter of lack of time and resources. Do they have a PAA? Pinterest Addicts Anonymous? Cause if so...This chick definitely needs to attend. I LOVE pinterest. Anything from home stuff to my crafts, and quotes, books, hunting and fishing, and even my gun addiction as well. It's definitely not just for women. I also have one for our dealership and get decent results as far as repins and the like. Has it sold a car, no. But I look at pinterest as more of a "informative" place for customers. I keep boards for vehicle maintenance, travel tips, car detailing tips, technology, and guns (if you couldn't tell we love our guns around here...). Jason I followed you. Hard core nerdery huh?
