Managing, Editing and Adding Themes to your site

If you are anything like me you will want to get right into changing how your WordPress website looks. Browsing through available free themes and commercial themes is like being a kid in the candy store.
It doesn't matter if you know what look and functionality you want on your site at this point  If you do have an idea you of course can zero in you search.  On the other hand if your not sure what you want browsing through all of the possibilities will help give you some ideas too.

WordPress Twenty Ten Theme

Since WordPress comes out of the box with the Twenty Ten theme the following video will cover how to change the header and background so you can start right away.

Commercial & Free Themes

WordPress has over a thousand free themes available for download into your website.  In the video I will cover how to search for free themes as well as how to activate them.  Just a side note: I refer to "commercial" themes as "premium" themes in the video.  WordPress has been making an effort eliminate the use of "premium" as it relates to paid theme and now call them "commercial". This is something that you will want to be aware of as you search for themes.

While everybody is jumping on the social media band wagon trying to figure all of that out too many people fail to capitalize on the KEY component. People fail to see the power of Wordpress based blogs and how well thought, well written articles about the right subjects can greatly influence your search engine rankings, build trust with customers and help you build your own brand. I started my blog www.daveknowscars.com a little over a year ago. Today I get calls on my cell phone and emails from people all over the country, every day, because they found my blog and want to ask me questions or run the deal they're being offered by their local dealer by me to see if it's a good one, to see if they're being dealt with fairly. Google things like "Mercedes sign and drive lease" "mercedes option packages" "mercedes towing capacity" "mercedes discounts" just about anything with Mercedes in it and daveknowscars.com will be on the first page... usually top three or five listings, on Google, every time. That's the power of a Wordpress blog focused on good content, brutal honesty and a good sense of humor.

Just a note - most of the free themes are open source \ gpl license, so you can grab bits from different themes and combine them into one. One thing to look closely at when choosing a theme is what kind of menus the themes support. Wordpress added a custom menu builder fairly recently and a lot of themes don't support it, so in many cases your default menus are limited to your pages. Creating links based off of categories, or links back to your website has to be coded by hand. So for Wordpress beginners, you need to watch for the custom menus functionality. I use Mystique on a couple of my dealer blogs, with full custom graphics\color schemes - blog.morries.com and blog.twincitiesluxuryauto.com - both of these use the aforementioned custom menus. Another site I built www.mncandc.com uses a customized pixel theme which didn't support the custom menus, so that menu is just hand coded. A great tool for customizing the look of your blog if you're on a mac is CSSEdit - which will give you a wysiwyg editor, running on top of a live preview, so you can really see how your css edits are going to affect the layout. All you have to do when you're done is copy the style page and paste into your Wordpress theme via > appearance > editor > styles.css.

WordPress is a great tool. I built my business around it and do almost 100% of our websites using WP, for both my business and our clients. It can be used as a blog and as a fully custom website and there is almost nothing you can not do with WordPress. Originally, I believed that dealership professionals would want to learn how to master WP, but after witnessing dealership personnel show such little interest embracing the technology through the years, I stop trying to train them. This video shows you how to do one thing in one theme. People that need a video to show them how to do this are probably going to need a video that shows them how to do everything else too. If you are one of those people, then my recommendation is to find a WP expert who can handle these things for you so that you can concentrate on building relationships with customers and growing your business as opposed to being bogged down learning this awesome technology. However if videos like this are what you need, then let me know and I would be happy to lead you over to our own library of videos that show you how to do a variety of things in WP. I am sure Mike has more too and between the two libraries you could gain a lot of really useful stuff pertaining to WP. It truly is an awesome platform for content management. Good stuff Mike.

Wordpress themes provide a great solution for trainers, consultants, vendors, and dealers. In fact we use Wordpress for our Carfolks dealer blog too. http://carfolks.net/ If you use a custom theme you really need to have some professional assistance to make sure it is configured properly. If anyone needs additional advice, I'd be glad to assist.

Ryan, you are so right. As one of the early Wordpress adopters you saw the need to help dealers with blogs and have seen first hand how they really help boost the marketing visibility of a dealership. Dealer's looking for a simple blog solution should check out http://blogproautomotive.com/ as they offer multiple solutions and even a basic free solution too.
