Manheim Debuts Its Largest All-Digital Heavy Truck Sale

Auction Delivers a Safer, More Efficient Experience for Customers, Employees and the Environment

ATLANTA (January 14, 2020) – Manheim launched its largest all-digital heavy truck auction on January 8 at its Indianapolis, Indiana, location; a move that further supports the company’s growing investment in Digital Blocks. The sale included more than 350 units and 387 online and in-lane bidders.  Manheim Indianapolis is part of the company’s all-digital Specialty Auctions that include RVs and motorcycles as well as trucks.

“Our biweekly truck sale is Manheim’s largest heavy truck auction nationwide.  It includes Class 4-8 commercial trucks, tractor trailers and other equipment,” explained Emily Decker, general manager for Manheim Indianapolis and Manheim Cincinnati. “Moving to a Digital Block format offers a safer and more efficient experience for our clients and employees, as well as significant environmental savings.”

The three-lane format is a live auction where the trucks remain parked in designated spots and are offered for sale digitally by an auctioneer via oversized monitors featuring enhanced images, barcode price scanning capability and condition report information. Manheim calculates that the switch to an all-digital format – versus driving trucks through physical lanes – will offset an estimated 284 tons of carbon dioxide each year, an amount equal to the annual electricity use of 45 homes.

“Safety always comes first,” said Paul Seger, executive vice president, asset remarketing for Element Fleet Management Remarketing and longtime Manheim partner. “Going digital for the sale of our heavy truck assets not only instills safety, but also improves efficiency and establishes consistency for our truck buyers nationwide. Because so many of them are already comfortable with Manheim’s Simulcast online bidding platform, we feel this transition to all digital will be very well received.”

Manheim’s digital journey marked several milestones in 2019, with Manheim Tucson becoming the first location to convert all lanes to Digital Blocks and its digital wholesale channels surpassing two million transactions. Digital Blocks now comprise 20% of the lanes at physical locations nationwide.

“As we celebrate 75 years of providing wholesale solutions for dealer and commercial clients, we are excited about expanding our digital marketplace to achieve greater efficiency, improve the experience for clients and foster a culture of safety,” said Grace Huang, president of Manheim.

From Coast To Coast, Manheim Employees Make the Holidays Brighter This Year For Their Community

Gift-giving included socks for the homeless, bikes for an after-school program, dinner baskets for a food bank, and supplies for an animal shelter

ATLANTA, Ga. (December 17, 2019) – From Georgia to California and Michigan to Florida, Manheim employees nationwide made the holidays brighter this year for those in their local communities who are in need.

Manheim employees donated bikes to a Boys and Girls Club, provided tents to a local Boy Scout Troop, held sock drives for the homeless (the most requested item by those who live outside during the cold fall and winter months) and collected supplies for an animal shelter. They also hosted Angel Trees to provide gifts for foster children, fellow coworkers and others in need during the holidays; collected canned goods, prepared Christmas dinner baskets and made cash donations to local food banks; and partnered with Toys for Tots, the Salvation Army and Children’s Miracle Network.

Examples of Manheim locations sharing their giving spirit:

- Manheim Detroit adopted all of the families living at the local women’s shelter. “We fulfilled everything on their wish lists and gave each mom a grocery gift card, decorations, wrapping paper and the supplies they needed to make Christmas morning special for their family,” explained General Manager Mandy Savage. “We have done this for years with our employees who raise the money through jean days, bake sales, raffles and our popular yearly garage sale.”

- Manheim Pittsburgh supported the Butler County Children and Youth Agency’s annual Christmas program by sponsoring 20 children in addition to collecting non-perishable items for a local food bank. “Over the course of 19 years, I would estimate we have helped ensure that 450 children have a merry Christmas,” said General Manager Tom McDonald.

- Manheim Riverside in California hosted a holiday party for the local Ronald McDonald House. The family event featured a coloring and craft table for the children to create their own Christmas cards, 100 wooden ornaments for the families to decorate, and paper and envelopes for the children to write letters to Santa that were sent to the North Pole. Food trucks provided dinner, and there was hot cocoa and cookies for all. Words can’t express how proud I am of our team whose warm hearts make giving a top priority during the holidays and throughout the year,” said General Manager Chris Brown.

While December may be the most wonderful time of the year, Manheim’s season of giving lasts year-round as part of parent company Cox Enterprises, Inc.’s deep commitment to corporate social responsibility. In addition to partnering with Toys for Tots for more than two decades to collect and distribute holiday toys, Cox makes charitable giving a year-round activity by focusing its corporate philanthropy on three critical areas: empowering communities and individuals, preserving the environment and promoting diversity.

Manheim Surpasses Two Million Digital Transactions in 2019

Clients are increasingly turning to digital options to gain efficiencies.

ATLANTA – November 21, 2019 – Manheim’s investment in giving clients more ways to transact anytime, anywhere is driving greater confidence, with clients increasingly turning to the company’s digital platforms for their wholesale needs. Across Manheim, digital wholesale channels have seen exponential growth in 2019—hitting the two million transaction milestone in the first week of November. In addition to providing an efficient auction experience, Manheim’s digital platforms provide a safer way to buy while helping clients more effectively run their businesses.

“At Manheim, we’re enabling clients to transact when, where and how they want to, and more and more clients are realizing the significant benefits of going digital,” said Zach Hallowell, vice president of Manheim Digital. “With the largest audience of buyers and widest selection of vehicles, our digital platforms bring significant value to clients on both sides of the sale.”

In October, 48% of vehicles were sold to a digital buyer. Digital-only transactions—those that take place through Manheim.com, Manheim Express, OVE and Private Stores—are up 22% year over year, and Simulcast transactions are up 9% in that same timeframe. Some sellers in Manheim’s Digital Private Stores have seen as much as 50% growth in their sales.

Kirk Lamont, purchasing coordinator at Robinson Automotive, had this to say about buying in the digital wholesale marketplace: "In this day and age when you have so many devices, why not buy digitally? It’s an easier platform. As long as you do your homework up front, you know what you’re bidding on. One of the main benefits is when I have a client looking for a particular vehicle that I can’t find locally, I have the confidence to go outside my region, look at some cars and know they’re described as they should be. All I have to do is just push a button and buy a car."

In addition to growing its various digital-only platforms, Manheim has also ramped up the number of Digital Blocks across its physical footprint, which now comprise 20% of the company’s physical lanes (up 30% in the last three months). Digital Blocks provide all the things clients enjoy about a physical sale—the excitement, auctioneer and in-lane and online bidders. The only difference is that vehicles are shown on screens rather than being driven through the lanes

Manheim Tucson recently became the first location to go “all digital,” converting all of its lanes to Digital Blocks. Sales rates and vehicle values have continued to show strong results, proving that a digital sale can be just as successful as a physical one for buyers and sellers alike.

Through the end of 2019 and beyond, Manheim will continue investing in its digital platforms, bringing more choice and value to clients who transact in the largest and most trusted wholesale marketplace.

New Manheim Research Shows Vehicle Certifications Increase Wholesale Values, Sales

ATLANTA (November 7, 2019) –  It’s often said that for every car there is a buyer, however, the key to making the sale is giving buyers confidence in their purchases. For older and high mileage cars, certifications can give buyers the confidence they need to purchase vehicles faster, while giving sellers a competitive edge and stronger profits.

Research from a recent white paper from Manheim Consulting, “Certification Impact on Low Grade & High Mileage Units,” found certified wholesale vehicles sell faster and at rates four to eight percent higher than their uncertified counterparts. In fact, the benefits and returns only rise as mileage surpasses 75,000, signaling buyers are willing to pay a premium for the guarantee of a mechanically sound unit, even at a lower grade or higher mileage.

“Manheim’s goal is to build trust and confidence between buyers and sellers within the wholesale market,” said Brett Woods, vice president of Assurance at Cox Automotive. “While this data reinforces that vehicles with Certifications are at an advantage, we’re also reminded that giving buyers assurance before the sale is the best way to create a positive experience and earn loyalty.”

Manheim launched its own certification program, Manheim Certified, to improve profit margins for the seller and protect the interests of all parties involved. It provides buyers a 7-day, 300-mile guarantee, giving them more confidence to do business. If something does happen with the vehicle, Manheim will either repair the vehicle in-house, cover the costs of the repair or in periodic cases, take the vehicle back. In any case, sellers of Manheim Certified units are removed from the post-sale claims process, so they don’t have to worry about arbitration.

Further benefits and competitive advantages of certifications are:

- 4 to 8 percent greater returns per vehicle sale

- One third fewer arbitrations

- 6.6 percent more Simulcast sales

- 48 percent wider Simulcast audience reach and more bids per vehicle

Manheim Certified is currently available to all sellers in the Manheim marketplace. Vehicles must be under 125,000 miles, have an InSight Condition Report and be on-site to qualify. To learn more about how certifications help dealers sell inventory faster and increase buyer confidence when purchasing on the wholesale market, please visit www.manheim.com.

New iRecon, vAuto Provision Integration Offers End-to-End Used Vehicle Inventory Management

Dealers can now manage inventory and reconditioning through one, integrated workflow in vAuto Provision

Oakbrook Terrace, IL. – September 19, 2019 –vAuto announced today a first of its kind integration that brings the used vehicle inventory management process full circle, offering dealers a more holistic approach to getting a car from acquisition through the reconditioning process and front line ready.

Every day a used vehicle sits in service or waits on a vendor for reconditioning, dealers lose out on opportunities to increase turn, while the holding costs weigh heavy on their profits. To complicate matters further, dealers have no easy way to track reconditioning efficiency without adopting additional tools, creating a workflow spanning multiple systems and logins. Without this crucial connection between reconditioning and inventory management, the already razor thin margin for error becomes even more challenging for dealers.

By bringing together iRecon and Provision, dealers will now be able to closely monitor, update and execute the reconditioning process, while leveraging vAuto’s industry-leading data to make more informed decisions on used car inventory. This ultimately creates one connected view of the entire inventory management process, giving dealers a leg up in the increasingly critical used-vehicle market.

“Decreasing profitability is drastically affecting how dealers remain successful in a tightening automotive market, meaning every sale counts more than ever,” said Randy Kobat, senior vice president of vAuto, HomeNet, Rates & Incentives and Dealertrack DMS. “With consumers dictating the retail price and how much it costs to acquire a car determined by the competition in the wholesale market, dealers can only truly control profits internally. By streamlining the reconditioning process, dealers have an unprecedented opportunity to reduce the holding costs and time it takes to move a vehicle from just arrived to front line ready.”

“Dealers can no longer afford to think about reconditioning and inventory management in separate siloes. The time it takes to switch from platform to platform is eating into efficiency and hindering a full view of operations,” said Mike Boyd, senior director of business enablement and founder of iRecon. “This new integration from iRecon and Provision gives dealers the accessibility and information they need to more effectively navigate the entire used car operation, helping get more vehicles on the market faster.”

With this integration, dealers using vAuto’s Provision can create and monitor their reconditioning plan, gain insight into the current status of any vehicle going through the reconditioning process, directly link into iRecon and review needs attention call outs. iRecon and Provision tested this concept with dealer clients, and they are finding early success leveraging the integration.

“By integrating iRecon into our Provision platform, our team can now more effectively track every vehicle from one central location, no matter the step in the reconditioning and inventory management process,” said Dan Garwatoski, used car manager, Nissan North in Columbus, Ohio. “This offers a better estimate of when each vehicle will be ready for our lot, helping to easily manage inventory turn rates and allowing our dealership to account for holding costs properly.”

iRecon will now be available to dealers as both a standalone product as well as part of vAuto Provision. For more information on the integration, visit https://www.vauto.com/franchise/used/products/irecon/.

About vAuto

vAuto® provides innovative technology, tools and business intelligence to thousands of dealerships across the United States and Canada, helping them compete more effectively and increase new/used vehicle sales volumes and profits. Founded in 2005, vAuto revolutionized dealers’ used vehicle operations with the groundbreaking Provision® suite of tools. Leveraging The Velocity Method of Management®, pioneered by vAuto founder, Dale Pollak, Provision helped dealers adopt a more transparent- and turn-focused approach to used vehicle acquisition, appraising, pricing and merchandising based on real-time, local market supply-and-demand data. vAuto’s solutions also include Conquest, a new vehicle inventory management and pricing system, and Stockwave, which enables dealers to efficiently find and purchase vehicles from leading wholesale sources via a single platform. In 2018, vAuto released the Provision ProfitTime metric and methodology to help dealers maximize inventory turn and gross profit based on the investment value or profit potential of each vehicle. The same year, the company expanded its integrations with Cox Automotive’s HomeNet unit and acquired iRecon, an online reconditioning workflow platform. The moves extend vAuto’s efficiency-focused used vehicle management solutions into vehicle merchandising and reconditioning.

Headquartered near Chicago, Illinois, vAuto is a Cox Automotive™ brand.

Dealers Get Upgraded Buying Experience on Manheim Express

App will provide dealers greater control with offer management and personalized vehicle recommendations

ATLANTA (September 5, 2019) – Since launching its buyer experience in January 2019, the Manheim Express app raised the bar on digital wholesale buying by offering dealers a more efficient purchasing process. Today, Manheim is excited to announce that the buyer experience just got even better. Thanks to the launch of two new features, dealers will be able to enjoy AI-driven vehicle recommendations and the convenience of managing offers directly within the Manheim Express app. Both upgrades are part of Manheim’s ongoing efforts to harness the power of data and technology to put more confidence-boosting tools in dealers’ palms.

“The goal of the Manheim Express buyer experience is to empower dealers to make fast, yet confident purchasing decisions, and we continue to up the ante on how we help them achieve that,” said Derek Hansen, vice president of Offsite Solutions at Manheim. “Managing offers in the app will give dealers increased flexibility to conduct business wherever is easiest for them, and personalized vehicle recommendations uses the latest AI technology to highlight vehicles that fit their inventory mix.”

The buyer experience inside the Manheim Express app was part of the $100 million investment Manheim committed to its digital marketplace throughout 2019. The company’s goal was to boost the development of new technological tools and services to help dealers reduce waste, turn inventory faster, buy vehicles with increased confidence and improve dealer profitability.

Now, the buyer experience inside the Manheim Express app will get two more improvements, fueled by dealers’ evolving needs as they increase use of digital wholesale platforms:

Recommended Vehicles
Fueled by M LOGIC, a suite of decisioning products from Manheim, deeply personalized vehicle recommendations in Manheim Express will allow dealers to see up to 50 vehicles that are predicted to fit their specific needs under the new ‘Recommended’ tab. To accomplish this, M LOGIC’s machine learning uses data across Manheim's digital and physical properties to identify dealer preferences based on location and vehicle attributes. The ultimate goal of this data-driven AI is to help buyers find relevant inventory quicker and easier through the Manheim Express app. A similar feature has been recently added to the Manheim Market Report valuation tool.

Manage Offers
With in-app access to offer management, dealers can directly manage offers without needing to access a desktop computer. Dealers will be able to retract offers, make a new offer or accept, submit and reject counteroffers—all within the app.

These additions to the in-app buyer experience, available in September, will buoy the success Manheim Express and its users have already seen. Since its launch one year ago, Manheim Express has been downloaded by nearly 60,000 users representing 18,500 dealerships across the country.
