5 things Dealer should do before bringing on Digital Marketing Vendors

5 things Dealer should do before bringing on Digital Marketing Vendors

1. Map your Inventory feed

I run into this issue almost every day.  Inventory maps are a must so that you can ensure that accurate information is syndicated to your vendors. Its very time consuming but here is how you do it.  Call your DMS and ask who they are sending the feed to, more than likely its an IMS like Homenet, Inventory Plus, ETC. Then ask the IMS where they are sending the feed. It could be vAuto, Your website or vendors. It should look like one of these  (DMS--->IMS--->vAuto---> website and other Vendors) or (DMS--->IMS--->website and other vendors) (DMS---> IMS--->Website--->other vendors)

2. Used Car and New Car managers Pricing in same system

This is crucial for accurate information.  Most used car manage price in vAuto or the IMS while most New car Manager price in the DMS or the website backend tool.  This created difficulty when trying to get an accurate feed.

3. Own your Google Analytics Account

This ensures that no matter what vendor you go with you have historical data to make decisions with.  It also allows you to inspect and verify.  Our customers in dealerships demand transparency; We should demand the same transparency out of our vendors.

4. Own all Social Media Accounts

A dealership should have at least 3 people in management as admins on every social media account.  The process of trying to recover an account after you fire a vendor or an employee is lengthy and stressful.  If you do find yourself in this situation try Twitter support its the fastest.

5. Pricing and Merchandising

If a car has been on the lot 200 days and hasn't sold, The first thing I look at is pricing and merchandising.  Are the pictures of good quality? How many pictures? Is the Trim Level right? Is the color right?  The best resource I know of in the industry for best practices is Jasen Rice at Lotpop.  Here is a link to his free content: http://www.lotpartyshow.com/video-tips.html

Let's "face" it... Mind reading works to close deals faster!

Hypnotic Selling

One of the struggles that people face in this business is how to actually approach a person and engage them quickly.  In my conversations with customers over the last month, I have asked them how they were approached by a salesperson and what worked for them.  What seems to keep coming up is that most salespeople just go to the same old approach instead of learning to change their approach based on the individual that they are with at that moment.  I know that what works to convince me is not what works to convince others.  What I needed was an unfair advantage.  I need to be able to read a person's mind before they ever said a word.

I reached out Jody Holland who is an expert in face reading.  I wanted to know his insights on how I could know who a person was before I ever asked them a question.  I wanted to be able to adjust my approach based on that one person at that one moment in time.  Here is what I found out...

There are five basic components of the face that matter when making your approach.  Jody says that we are predictable in how we will want to approach people based on the makeup of our own faces as well.  "I can tell you the way that a person will approach a potential customer and I can tell you which customers will NOT respond to them based on the comparison of their faces" says Holland.  The five components of the face are the forehead which tells you whether the customer will respond to emotional or logical appeals.  The second component is the eyebrows, which will tell you how much time you need to spend building rapport, or just get down to business.  The eyes will tell you how optimistic or pessimistic the person is as well as how long they need to think about a choice before they make a decision.  The chin will tell you the manner in which a person judges themselves.  This means that you need to know whether or not you need to push or pull them towards a decision.  Finally, the ears will tell you the language pattern that a person will respond to.  There are three language patterns that people will respond to.  Visual thinkers need to see the car and take a ride.  Auditory people will want to know about the features and benefits and you will need to be able to explain them clearly.  The kinesthetics will need to touch the car, drive the car, and feel something in the way that you explain it.

I have seen Jody in action and watched the way that he dives inside of a person's mind and becomes their thoughts.  It is absolutely fascinating to see how people cannot escape the process of giving up control of their own minds when a person knows who they are from the inside out.  Face reading, which was originally known as physiognomy, gives a person the ability to see inside the mind of the customer before they ever say a word.  it gives a salesperson the ability to read a mind and know exactly which buttons need to be pushed in order to close deals faster and leave the customer feeling that they went out of their way to buy, but they were never "sold."

With the changes in how younger people buy, this skill is the magic wand of knowing who a person is and getting them to chase you down to buy from you.  I have read Jody's book, Hypnotic Selling, and I have gone through his training on face reading.  I use this skill now to connect with people quicker, to unlock what they want, and to inspire them to buy!

Outside of the Box Way to get Free Advertising Ideas

Are you tired of using the same advertising ideas that the majority of your Industry uses?  Come see our “Giant” size selection of New, Pre-Owned and Certified Pre-Owned cars they won’t last long… blah blah blah.  Have you had enough of the same old crappy commercials that try to get you in right now to buy right now?

Let’s shake things up a little bit!  In 2016 Street Volkswagen of Amarillo teamed up with West Texas A&M’s Marketing 4343 Class.  The student teams were tasked with creating campaign concepts on how to market the Volkswagen brand to consumers in the Amarillo area.

The quality of the content produced by the 6 teams was outstanding.  We ended up with 3 hours’ worth of content packed video.  One of the most unique ideas was to have our General Manager do a video blog.  The blog has been a huge success with Volkswagen of America, our customers here in the Amarillo area and it even boosts morale in the store.

I know you guys are just like me and get flooded with calls and email from advertisers, lead providers, vendors, and Nigerian Princes sharing their wealth.  Sometimes the best ideas are free and can come from just using resources in your community while supporting your community at the same time.

We are about to do the same case study again for 2017 with WTAMU.  Stay tune for more ideas.

DealerRater pushed a press release today that they have pushed reviews to the Cars.com Platform. According to the press release, this is about three million reviews.

I would recommend checking DealerRater and Cars.com to make sure your dealership or auto group doesn't have any errors.

Anyone can be a Bi-Lingual Salesman now

I came across an article today on a piece of new technology developed by Waverly Labs.  It is an earpiece that translates between languages.  My first initial thought was this could change the game for salesmen.  Technology removing language barriers would help us understand and serve our customers needs so much better.

I am anxious to hear thoughts on this technology.  Sound off Driving Sales Cmmunity.

Now Coming to the Ring..... Amazon

Amazon is slowly making their transition into the Automotive Industry.  They have in depth Vehicle Detail Pages for almost every make and model.  These pages include, Reviews, MSRP, Color choices, Trim and style levels, IIHS safety inormation, and much more.

Amazon has just given us an amazing third party tool for evidence manuals.  These VDP pages with no pressure and loads of information are transparent and easily shared.  While there is something bigger in play here in the meantime they are a great resource to build rapport and gain some third party validation.

Amazon is looming on the horizon with Jeff Bezos desperate to get into the car business. Allowing Amazon to sell new cars would create a nationwide competitor with virtually unlimited capital and a completely differnent objective - growing Amazon Prime members - than traditonal dealership's to grow sales, service & loyalty. Would Amazon open brick & mortar stores to service as well as sell? Amazon getting into the business raises myriad questions for franchised dealers as well as consumers.

"This and one more will make two"

When I was a kid I grew up in a small town with both parents that worked full time, this meant I was headed to work with dad. Since I was 7 years old I would go with my dad, the town's plumber/handyman, after school and on the weekends. He showed me how to figure the materials we would need for a job, figure how much we would charge, and to build rapport with customers.

When we would take on jobs that we normally wouldn't do I would ask, "Dad, have your ever done this before?" His answer was always the same, "This and one more will make two."

I recently had to give a speech in front of 1000+ people. I was running on 3-hrs of sleep, two of my flights were delayed, and hadn't eaten all day. While waiting to go on stage, I was complaining to myself about the day I had been through and the fact that I hadn't had time to practice my speech. Then my dad's words came to me. I laughed and went on stage.

My dad was teaching me to always take challenges and don't look at them any different. They are just another task to complete, another goal to accomplish, or another experience that shapes you.
